在FiM系列以前的MLP动画作品习惯上会沿用同期玩具的断代，大致地用G1、G2和G3区分。
G1在电视上播出的作品有My Little Pony（G1，1986~1987年播出，分两季）和My Little Pony Tales（G1，1992年播出，一季），另外还有一部1986年播出的电影。
G2玩具线没有对应的动画，但是有使用动画形象的广告。
G3的动画都是以玩具内附赠录像带的方式分发。2008年孩之宝推出Ponyville figurines系列玩具后，玩具附赠的动画也画风突变，常和这一时期的玩具一样被称作G3.5。
时光飞逝，第一代小马的商标已经变成了一个80年代的符号，在今天依旧能在一些怀旧复古商品牌中见到
G4动画（这里指FiM，Pony Life暂不在讨论范围内）的主角们在性格设计上很大程度上参考了G1小马们；在名字和外观上受版权、商标等因素影响，也参考了G3小马（典型例子是云宝和萍琪）。G3.5之前的MLP作品并没有格外聚焦于固定的一批角色，在玩具发行上更是如此，G4的主角组概念以及“Mane Six”的称呼也可以视为G3.5的“Core Seven”的延续。

2010年以前的小马玩具产品线也被玩具收藏家们分为了三代：
第一代小马（G1）：1982年开始发行，在美国一直发行至1992年，而在美国以外的地区发行到了1995年。期间还推出过“My Little Kitty”之类的非小马玩具。
第二代小马（G2）：1997年到1999年发行，孩之宝使用的称呼是“Friendship Garden”。和G1相比，玩具在眼睛和姿势上做出了一定的改动，增加了可以扭的头部，身材也更“瘦高”。据说这一代在欧洲更流行一些，在他们那儿叫做“Ponyland”。
第三代小马（G3）：2003年到2009年发行，在设计上显然面向的是更加低龄的小朋友们。这一代小马们生活的地方被称作“Ponyville”（很熟悉吧）。早期的玩具只有陆马角色，直到2005年和2006年才分别引入天马和独角兽。
2008年，角色被局限在了称为“Core Seven”的七只小马上。而在2009年，玩具在外观上被改为一体成型、比一般G3玩具更小的“Ponyville figurines”，被收藏者称为G3.5。
一小部分G3玩具在MLP: FiM开播后仍然发行。

如果你指的是自1982年以来发行的整个My Little Pony系列……
整个MLP系列还有没有前身呢？答案是肯定的。
最初Bonnie Zacherle女士和Charles Muenchinger先生以矮种马为原型设计的玩具在外观上与现实中的小马非常接近，有着棕色身体和浅色鬃毛，没有可爱标记，可以像娃娃一样被梳妆打扮。
这款玩具被划分到孩之宝的“Romper Room”部门下，于1981年发行，名称为“My Pretty Pony”。

而在最早的棕色小马发行后，另一款粉色的My Pretty Pony玩具出现在了市场上。这一次的小马驹拥有了可爱标记，包装盒上的商标也转变为了与未来的G1小马类似的形式。
或许是这两款玩具10英寸（约25厘米）的个头实在过于巨大，销量并不是特别好。于是后来孩之宝另外制作了个头更小（6英寸，约15厘米）的彩色小马玩具。
更小版本的小马玩具显然更受欢迎一些，从1982年开始以包括邮购在内的各种方式单独上架。作为My Pretty Pony的缩小版，新系列的名字被称作My Little Pony。
而My Pretty Pony系列和更小版本的小马以“My Pretty Pony and Beautiful Baby”的名义混搭，至少售卖到了1983年前后。在那之后，My Pretty Pony系列便消失在了历史长河中。
那只个头更小的小马名也以“Butterscotch”的名字在G1中出现
MPP系列的历史尤为短暂，与后继的MLP系列相比如昙花一现。但作为最初进行市场试水的玩具系列，收藏家们依旧会时不时以Generation Zero（G0）称呼，将其视为MLP系列的一部分。
