故事叙述了小马Twilight Sparkle（紫悦/暮光闪闪）为了执行导师Princess Celestia（宇宙公主）给她的任务，与助手Spike（穗龙/斯派克）一起来到Ponyville（小马谷）学习有关友谊魔法的知识，在学习和生活的过程中她结识了五位好朋友，并获得了真正的友谊，与朋友们共同守护Equestria（小马利亚）。
起源：
孩之宝制作了与“小马宝莉”专属相关的各世代玩具与游戏，被收藏家称呼为第1代至第3代。首次于1991年公开播送的《My Little Pony Tales》，是在本电视系列剧之前。随着各种影音产品首映的释出，其设计随后改成了第3代版本。
当动画师兼作家劳伦·浮士德（Lauren Faust）受雇于孩之宝工作室的丽莎·丽奇（Lisa Licht）时，丽奇展示了《My Little Pony》的其中一个动画作品《My Little Pony:The Princess Promenade》给浮士德看，“完全非常忙碌”。
