Marita13岁的时候，扎染T恤和布条牛仔裤极为盛行 。尽管我在经济大萧条中长大，也没有钱买衣服，我也从来没穿的这么“穷酸”过。一天我看到她在车道外用土石磨自己的牛仔，她如此毁坏我给她新买裤子让我非常吃惊，我赶紧跑出去告诉她。我跟她讲我童年心酸的肥皂剧，而她却好像没听到一样继续她的“工作”。我估计也没办法让她感动或是悔恨的流下泪水，我问她为什么要破坏心裤子。她头也没擡，说了一句："不能穿新衣服" "为什么不可以呢?"
"就是不可以, 所以我想把他们弄乱，好看起来旧一些。" 太不可理喻了 ！毁坏新衣服怎么会成为时尚呢?
每天早上，她要上学前，我都会盯着她叹息： "我的乖女儿穿成这样。。。." 她穿着爸爸的旧T恤，扎染了许多大蓝点和布条。我觉得像个扫垃圾的。还有这些牛仔！腰这么低！我都担心她要是深吸一口气，裤子都会掉下来！但是怎么掉呢? 他们又稳又紧的。那石头磨坏的底部，都系著线条，她走路的时候这些线条就拖在后面.
有一天，她已经离开家去学校了，上帝似乎在跟我说："你知不知道每天早上自己对Marita说的最后一句话? 我的乖女儿穿成这样子。。。.'她到学校后，朋友们讨论他们那一直抱怨的的老顽固母亲，你的话对她来说一直在起作用。你有没有注意过学校的其他女孩？为什么不去看看呢?"
那天我开车接她回家，发现许多其他女孩看起来更糟。在回家的路上我提到自己对她毁坏裤子反应过激，我提出了一个折中方案"从现在起，你想穿什么去学校就穿什么去，我不会再干涉！"
"那对我来说真是一种放松啊！."
"但是要是我带你出去到教堂，或是买东西，或是到朋友家探访，我希望你不需要我提醒就知道该穿什么"
她陷入了思考
然后我又说： "也就是说你又95％的自由度，我有 5％ 。你觉得呢?"
