为什么“Thereby”引导并列分句时，表示的实际意义明明是一个结果，但该分句却不能算作是结果状语从句？

Thereby 是副词，不是连词，所以不能引导结果状语从句，只能表示结果状语。

eg. Regular exercise strengthens the

heart,thereby reducing the risk of

heart attack.

类似的句子副词还有 however，

therefore，nevertheless,thus 等。

我觉得瞭解词的用法，可以从词性入手，然後类比。

thereby是副词，表示“因此，由此，从而”。

therefore/thus也是副词，跟它相同意思，用法可以类比。

副词不可能有後面绝对要加doing的结构，这是词性决定的。而且副词一般是不能代替介词/to使用的。

thereby doing，thereby是作为副词修饰doing这个动作。

官题中，and後面加thereby，只是为了突出前後的动作有因果关系。如果没有了thereby，仅仅根据and前後成份独立平行的关系，是判断不出exhibit和activate二者有什麽关系、发生先後顺序等。

to touch each exhibit and thereby activate

就是touch和activate平行，因为and後面直接用了activate。

如果後面是to activate的话，平行的就是to touch和to activate.
