devote，英语单词，动词，意为“致力于，奉献于；把……用于，作……专用；降祸于，诅咒”。

devote的用法

用法1：devote的基本意思是因特殊用处或目的而心甘情愿地献出某物,即“把…奉献,把…专用于”,常表示由于如同起誓般紧迫的动机而放弃和献出。

用法2：devote是及物动词,常接时间、精力、生命等抽象名词作宾语,而“专用”和“奉献”的对象则由介词to引出。

用法3：表示“忠于”“致力于”“献身于”时可用devote oneself to结构,也可用be devoted to结构。

用法4：devote的过去分词devoted可用作形容词,在句中作定语或表语。

用法5：devote to在美式英语里可以接动词不定式。

devote 和 dedicate的区别

这两个词都含“奉献”、“献身”的意思。

● dedicate 正式用词，指某人对高尚的事业坚定的决心和信念，并为其奉献一切，乃至生命。devote 普通用词，指决心把全部身心、精力、时间等献给某一目标、人或事业，并不十分强调对理想的奉献，而更多地强调出于热心，爱好而奉献。

两者只是意义侧重不同，常可替换。常用结构是：dedicate /devote…… to…… 。to 为介词，常接sth. 或doing sth.。

1）She dedicated /devoted all her life to the welfare of women and children.

她把一生都献给了妇女和儿童福利的事业。

2）He started to study ecology and decided to devote /dedicated his whole life to the science.

dedicate还可以用于表示把某物献给某人以表示爱戴或纪念。

● 这两个词的被动结构还可以用于表示“专用于”，dedicated多用于指组织、机构、报刊杂志等专用于；devoted多用于指物品专用于。

● devote 还可以用于表示“把“时间、精力、金钱等）花在……上面”，其结构是：devote ……to（doing）sth.,相当于spend 的用法，但spend的结构是：

spend …… on sh. 或spend …… (in) doing sh. 。

为什么用devoted不用devoting

用devoted有投入工作之后的意味，而ing更偏向现在正在进行的，毕竟后面用了完成时

我想请问下 为什么once 后面不可以用losing 还有为什么只能说devoted不能说devoting.这里不是主动关系吗？？？

答：这两句的都是非谓语动词作状语，其逻辑主语是句子的主语，机会和lose的关系是被动关系，**. lose a chance,-- a chance is lost.

Once such a chance is lost.-- Once lost, ...

第二句请注意devote是一个双宾动词，其基本用法 是dovote one's life to (doing) sth., 很多时候跟反身代词：devote oneself to (doing ) sth. , 所以这个人和devote之间是被动关系。

One devotes oneself to (doing) sth.--被动：**. is devoted to (doing) sth.

本句=As he is devoted to this work, the professor ...

译：致力于自己的事业，这教授对其它事情很少在意。

请教一下第三题，为什么不是devoting而是devoted？devote不是和he是主动关系吗？
