什么是遗传学？遗传学的意义是什么

遗传学（genetics）是研究生物的遗传和变异的科学。

生物有许多特征区别于非生物，但是最重要的是以下两点：第一是生存，第二是繁衍种族。生物通过各种方式繁衍种族。低等的单细胞生物通过简单的细胞分裂来繁殖，较高等的多细胞生物通过无性生殖又可通过有性生殖来繁殖。无论是什么方式，都是保证生命在世代间的延续，并使子代和亲代相似。大肠杆菌的后代仍然是大肠杆菌，牛的后代仍然是牛。这种世代间相似的现象就是遗传（heredity）。

有性生殖从精卵结合形成受精卵开始。含有特定遗传物质的受精卵，经过一系列的代谢变化，细胞分裂，增殖和分化，完成生长发育，形成新一代的个体。同一个（对）亲本可以繁殖不止一个后代，后代的不同个体之间基本相似，但并不完全相同，或者说总是互有差异的。后代与亲本相比，也不是完全相同的。同一物种内个体间的差异在遗传学上称为变异（variation）。
