矿物的化学成分可用化学式表达，如闪锌矿和石英可分别表示为ZnS和SiO2。但实际上所有矿物的成分都不是严格固定的，而是可在程度不等的一定范围内变化。造成这一现象的原因是矿物中原子间的广泛类质同象替代。
