许我稍作评价。
一、在牛津高阶中，enormous的释义是adj. extremely large 巨大的；庞大的；极大的。同义词是huge, immense. 示例：1. an enormous house/dog 2. an enormous amount of time 3. enormous interest 4. The problems facing the president are enormous.（此处应作“艰巨的”解）
所以我觉得enormous是形容程度，而不是数量。
再者，blood是不可数名次，不能与lives共用enormous。
因此何不把"enormous lives and blood"改为"countless lives and flowing/running blood" 等等。在中文里也有“血流成河”这种特别形象的稍带夸张的说法。
二、再者，我认为fake没有“illusory”来的恰当。illusory有如下释义：adj. not real, although seeming to be. 如 an illusory sense of freedom. illusory 能够表达出一种“虚幻”的感觉，一种“令人大失所望”的感觉。 而fake 则是说明了某种东西的属性，是一种定义，感**彩上远不如illusory强烈。
三、若是做了以上修改，则上联有九个词，对应的话，下联可以在yet 后面加一个only。only不仅填了空缺，而且在感情上起了强调作用。
四、pay与gain不是同韵尾，若是修改的话，建议保留pay, 在下联尾稍作修改。by the way, 我觉得，如果不是有太高的要求，可以不用太苛求押韵精准。
五、楼主的翻译有很多beautiful的地方。
