总体战略一般可分为：防御型战略、稳定型战略、紧缩型战略、混合型战略、进攻型战略、增长型战略。

1、防御型战略亦称“防守型战略”。竞争战略之一。企业保持现状或对可能损害企业竞争优势和盈利能力的事件的发生做出反应的战略。包括紧缩、剥离、清算等。

2、稳定型战略是指企业遵循与过去相同的战略目标，保持一贯的成长速度，同时不改变基本的产品或经营范围。它是对产品、市场等方面采取以守为攻，以安全经营为宗旨，不冒较大风险的一种战略。

3、所谓紧缩型战略是指企业从目前的战略经营领域和基础水平收缩和撤退，且偏离起点战略较大的一种经营战略。与稳定型战略和增长型战略相比，紧缩型战略是一种消极的发展战略。

4、混合型战略是稳定型战略、增长型战略和紧缩型战略的组合，事实上，许多有一定规模的企业实行的并不只是一种战略，从长期来看是多种战略的结合使用。

5、增长型战略（Growth Strategies），又称扩张型战略（Expansion Strategies）、进攻型战略(Attack Strategy)、发展型战略（Growth Strategies,或译为成长战略）。

从企业发展的角度来看，任何成功的企业都应当经历长短不一增长型战略实施期，因为从本质上说只有增长型战略才能不断的扩大企业规模，使企业从竞争力弱小的小企业发展成为实力雄厚的大企业。
