undermine和damage的区别

词义和用法不同。

undermine引申可作“损坏”解，这种损坏不是突然间的，而是有一个长期的过程，用作及物动词，接名词或代词作宾语。

damage的基本意思是“损害，伤害”，主要指自然力或人为地在价值、完整性、效能等方面造成损害，一般是局部地、非彻底地、可修复地，可以用于有形物，也可以用于无形物，还可表示对经济信心等造成坏的结果或影响。主要用作及物动词，可用于被动结构。

damage， destroy这两个词的共同意思是“损坏”“破坏”。其区别是：

1、在程度上， destroy指十分彻底地破坏，而damage指并不彻底地破坏。

2、在后果上， destroy指不能或很难修复了，而damage指不能发挥正常作用了。

3、在对象上， destroy可接物，也可接人，而damage通常只用于非生物。

4、在造成破坏的原因上， destroy多指不可抵抗的外界力量，而damage则常指因人的过失。

常用的是destroy.同义词还有许多：

annul,abrogate,demolish,expunge,extirpate,extinguish,liquidate,mutilate,quell和ravage。当然，destroy的同义词远远不止这些，下面根据这些词的含义分为几个类别，边分析边补充。（词汇分析大致选择专业英语词汇，兼带部分较难的大学英语词汇，其余简单词汇在此不作讨论）

1.第一类词的大致意思可以理解为“终止效果（尤指法律法令条文等等），invalidate”。

在这个层面上的近义词有annul，nullify，abrogate，rescind，repeal，revoke，reverse等。

annul这个取消或废除强调的是官方性和合法性，比如a treaty that annuls all previous agreements。

nullify可以是make null之类的意思，不过它还有完全抵消的含义，这是这里其它几个词没有的。比如His efforts have been nullified by his overacting.

abrogate与annul相比更加突出其官方或合法。

rescind强调的是正当权利的行使。比如通过vote否决，或者法律英语中的rescind a contract等，都是其常见的用法。

repeal高端词汇，尤指立法机构自己废除之前颁布的法令。

revoke可以有“吊销”的意思，比如revoke a license

reverse用在废除取消法令上属高阶词汇，专指比较高等的**废止有争议的law,decree或者court decision。

2.以下一堆词都和“消灭，毁灭，毁坏，消迹”有关：abolish, annihilate, demolish, devastate, dilapidate, eradicate, expunge, exterminate, extinguish, extirpate, liquidate, obliterate, ravage, raze, undermine等等，词汇比较多，慢慢来。

abolish这里强调的是消除消灭那些为法律，习俗，情况等不容的东西，通常是状况行为条令等，不可以指人或物。如to abolish the surtax。

annihilate高阶词汇，指彻底消灭某事的存在，物质类的和非物质类的都可。可以联想到物理学上的电子(electron)和正电子(positron)相撞泯灭就是这个单词。当然也可以指全歼敌军，如annihilate the enemy.

demolish所指的毁灭毁坏通常带有被拆除，粉碎之类的画面感。如demolish a house（这里就是纯粹的拆除之意）;再如The fire demolished the town（有房屋被烧毁坍塌粉碎的画面感）。该词另有驳倒，贪吃等用法，在此与毁灭含义无关，就不作讨论了。

devastate的原意（包括它的派生词devastation）是指大范围的巨大破坏，原因可以是战争，也可以是巨大的自然灾难，有被devastate之后满地荒凉的画面感。也可以引申为指对某人（通常是指有decisiveness的人）的心理产生巨大创伤，类似overwhelm的含义。如the devastation of losing a spouse。

dilapidate高阶词汇。它的毁坏是部分毁坏，指那种看上去破败的残破的失修的样子，而且通常无人可归咎。如a dilapidated car。古英语中该词的意思类似与waste, abuse等等。

eradicate指根除已经很稳固的事物，除之不易，强调物体的抵抗性。如Poverty is eventually eradicated.

exterminate通常指故意性地通过杀戮来导致即刻完全灭绝，如生物。如the failed attempts to exterminate mosquitoes，又如Entire peoples were exterminated in the concentration camp。

extinguish也指完全毁灭，不过是逐渐的。同时也可以有相当于中文“扑灭”的含义，“扑灭”火，希望，热情等都可。如a religion that is extinguished by governmetal oppression，或者extinguish my enthusia**等等。

extirpate高阶词汇。也是根除铲除的意思，与eradicate相比，并不强调物体产生的抵抗。可指灭绝一样种族，疾病，也可指通过完全阻断其传播途径来破除异端，迷信，邪说等。如extirpate social evils；extirpate the last vestiges of the religion；Many species are extirpated in this area.它最原本的意思就是连跟拔除，如extirpate a tree/weeds。同时它也是医学专业术语中摘除肿瘤的意思。

expunge指（从书册名单中）彻底清除、删除、划掉，不留痕迹。如to expunge your name from the list。

liquidate在这个层面上的意思最精确的翻译应该是“肃清”。如to liquidate traitors。当然，该词也是财会上的专业术语“清偿”。

obliterate高阶词汇。指由于掩盖、抹去或者毁坏，使得原本的东西完全无迹可寻。如The heavy rain obliterated all the footprints.又如an outdoor mural almost obliterated by graffiti。

ravage指暴力的，严重的，通常为持续的掠夺和毁坏。如Enemy soldier ravaged the village.又如a hurricane that ravaged the Gulf coast。

raze比较精确的翻译就是“夷为平地”。如raze what was left of the city from the surface of the earth。也可以引申一下，如to raze heroes' names from people's minds。

undermine强调暗中破坏。如undermine one's reputation by spreading rumours。

3.第三类都是指损伤严重，甚至残疾的意思。这类词包括cripple, mutilate, main, batter, mangle等

cripple是最常见的词了，通常指手臂或者腿残废。强调残疾之意。当然也可以引申一下，如a ship crippled by a storm或者The business was crippled by losses.等等

mutilate是指摘除，截除（可以是手术之类的正常切除，同amputate，也可以是非正常的）某一个重要部位（不一定是指人）而影响完整性，功能或者美感。比如A madman mutilated the painting with a razor blade.也可以引申为 The editor mutilated my text by removing whole paragraphs from it.这时就带有戏谑的口吻，类似于My text was castrated.之类的含义。

maim也是伤残的意思，不过原因一定是由于暴力。如He was maimed in the First World War.

batter是指由于连续猛击（a pounding with series of blows）而导致严重淤肿，畸形或外观缺损（mutilate）。如a ship batterd by fierce storms at sea.

mangle指由于撕裂或碾压导致大范围的伤口或裂口（laceration）。如those who are mangled by auto accidents.

4.最后一类以quell和suppress为代表，都是镇压的意思。

quell强调的是完全压制，使投降，镇定，或者转为被动。如quell one's fears。反义词为foment，煽动。

suppress则强调主观上要去镇压的决心。如The government suppressed all opposition newspapers.

undercut和undermine是同义词吗

undercut和undermine不是同义词，是近义词。

undercut翻译：要价少于，要价低于（竞争对手）,损害，削弱；损害；使失败。
