In this era of knowledge explosion, hundreds of publications come out every day. Facing the sea of books, we vary in our choice. Some of us prefer reading extensively in an attempt to “know something about everything”, while others opt for intensive reading so that they can absorb the best of human knowledge within the limited life. As far as I am concerned, the significance of intensive reading overrides that of extensive reading.

First and foremost, given the limited human life and the infinite human knowledge, intensive reading seems to be a wiser choice. Nowadays, the book market is filled with a motley collection of readings. The vulgar ones do nothing but waste our invaluable time, while only in the classics contains the essence of human knowledge. In this sense, an intensive reading of classics can maximize the efficiency of our learning, as all the junk information has been filtered after a careful selection.

Secondly, intensive reading gives us an in-depth understanding of a certain field, something that can never be obtained through extensive reading. For example, when we study the history of British literature, merely extensive reading is far from enough, for it just scratches the surface by presenting some general historical facts. On the contrary, through intensive reading, we are allowed to uncover surprising details in the lives of poets, essayists and novelists, and thus are enabled to interpret their works in a comprehensive and insightful way.

Last but not least, intensive reading brings a favourable outcome to our writing ability. If we only cast a general glance at A Dream in Red Mansions , what we can get is just the plot itself. Nevertheless, when we read this novel carefully, our mind will be engraved with the diction, sentence structure and rhetoric devices Cao Xueqin employed. Gradually, we will be capable of generating such well-formed language.

From what has been discussed, it is safe to arrive at the conclusion that the value of intensive reading outshines that of extensive reading. Since there is a limit to our life, we had better devote ourselves to one or two classics instead of getting lost in the sea of books.
